Who We Are
WLO Provides programs for the community that gives participants the skills needed to decipher and counteract the impact of unfiltered massmedia. In addition, these programs teach how to transfer these skills into projects that use media to address issues affecting the community.
WLO Summer '09
Summer 2009 kicked off the soft Launch of What's Left Out's Programming.
We began in May with the first WLO Salon gatherings in Harlem and in Brooklyn with Harlem bringing in some critical intergenerational conversation and Brooklyn tapping the pulse of a new generation of "activists."
June ushered in our collaboration with Harlem Initiative for Manhood and our Film-Based Youth Media Literacy Programming which continued throughout the summer. Learn more about these projects here.
Partner Up
What's Left Out is seeking community and corporate partners to help us deliver our programs to communities and individuals in need. This summer we have collaborated with the New York Public Library, HCZ Community Pride, The Media Spot, Good Shepard Services, Mission Society/Minisink Townhouse and Civic Association Serving Harlems, Inc. We have been able to provide fun, meaningful, enriching programming for over 250 youth, young adults and community members throughout Harlem and Brooklyn. Partner up with us and discover new opportunities to expand your programming and reach this important population. Email Partners_whatsleftout.org
Who is What's Left Out?
What’s Left Out (WLO) is collection of artists, activists, community organizers and teachers who strive to empower communities of color and encourage community problem solving through media literacy. We provide innovative, media-centric enrichment programs for adults and youth to counter negative media influence and provide empowering multi-media production skills.
What We Do
We live in an age of unprecedented access to information. Media saturates our daily lives, feeding us constant steam of information. Mainstream media has traditionally misrepresented communities of color, and the exponential increase in media threatens further distortion. At the same time, the American education system-- especially in inner-cities--is faltering. Over-reliance on test scores and inadequate funding leaves students without the skills critical for success in the global economy.
What’s Left Out Provides media literacy and enirchment programs for communities of color to counteract the impact of unfiltered mass media, to encourage community action, and to prepare youth for competition in the global marketplace. We provide media literacy based programs and services for all age groups in an effort to improve critical thinking and encourage community problem solving.

WLO SALON
Dialogue is the springboard for community action. Modeled on the Salon’s of the Harlem Renaissance and drawing from the wealth of talent and intellect in the community, WLO Salons create spaces for activists and freethinkers to hold discussions, to share works of art and ideas once a month and to channel their energy into positive actions.
The Salons are held in living rooms, lounges and other small community space to provide a safe intimate space for “Real Talk” about sensitive topics.
WLO Salons are digitally recorded and archived, and will provide future generations with insight into grassroots activism at the beginning of the Twenty-First Century.
WLO SUMMER FILM SCREENINGS
Film is an extremely powerful medium. This summer WLO is taking advantage of this tool by centering our programming film production and analysis. We use the parallels in film to call attention to community issues and empower participants with the skills to address them.
WLO believes in meeting people where they are... literally. This summer WLO will take our programming right to the streets with Film Screenings & Flash Films.
The Screenings will take place on summer evenings in parks, housing complexes, and apartment buildings throughout Harlem. These screenings take advantage of the power of a film screen to transform daily spaces into safe forums for entertainment and reflection, open to the entire community
WLO FLASH FILMS
"Flash Films" is designed to engage young people in an afternoon of self-expression and media exploration. Participants will write, storyboard, shoot, and edit a short film in one afternoon. Each session of Flash Films will engage young people from one city block, and will encourage participants to shoot the film on that block.
By doing so "Flash Films" seeks to highlight that every block uniquely lends itself to art, creativity, and critical thinking about the world. Each participant will receive a copy of the film and information on media literacy programs in New York City.
WLO FILM FORUMS
WLO Film Forums give area filmmakers the opportunity to showcase their work and recieve feedback from their comunity. Whether they are aspiring filmmakers, WLO program participants or seasoned professionals these forums are a great way to network and share messages.
